I received an email from Marshall Blonstein, CEO of Audio Fidelity, today regarding my suggestions for three additional possible QUAD SACD Titles (Bette Midler's The Divine Miss M and the two Columbia QUAD Chase albums) and he asked me if I purchased AF QUAD titles for the RBCD, Stereo or QUAD layers....to which I responded emphatically...The QUAD. And I also asked him if mixing guru Elliot Scheiner would be involved with any upcoming AF Surround SACDs.

When I receive his reply, I will certainly post it!

I've got a Millennium. #0066 I think. Made in USA. Updated it to play DVDs. I think that was free.
That was such a nightmare as we released the Mill before DVD was released. Any of them! The only thing the Mill looked for was a cd or a laserdisc. I had to fly to LA, go to a place near DTS and have them run code the DTS guys just wrote, and have eproms made. We then had to get them out to the folks who owned the Mill so they could play those new releases most coming out on DVD not laserdisc anymore. I may still have a few eproms around somewhere. Things were changing weekly it seemed.

Very interesting reading, Steelydave!

I was already planning on acquiring these 2 SACDs from AF, but your (and others) in depth discussions of them whet my appetite even more!

Fantastic news!! Thank you, Audio Fidelity!!!

And yes... Black Sabbath "Sabotage"... PLEASE!!!

I agree, and now there is hope for more QUADS announced but pulled last minute from WEA , thanks to AF'S relentless mining of the vault.

Such as those from; The Eagles, Black Oak Arkansas, Foghat, Leo Sayer, Rod Stewart, Uriah Heep, Todd Rundgren, etc.

It's worth noting by this sleuth anyway, that we now will have two quad discs (sacd & dvd) issued from the original '75 WEA Quad listings that had appeared in Schwann Record and Tape Catalogue with of course so much promise.

They of course they are :Jethro Tull-Minstrel In The Gallery and now Billy Cobham-Spectrum.

So with anticipation I look forward to further unreleased quads in the near future.I find this new resurgence of quad quite promising.

Unfortunately, we've been told through the grapevine that both the band and the management have given a resounding "No" to the possibility of releasing any Eagles' Quads. I found that quite upsetting, as that is a quite the snub to the fans as I'm sure there would be thousands lining up for those albums; not to mention introducing that music to countless young folks. But I guess the Eagles have enough money now and can't be bothered. I'm sure once they start dying off, if this program is still going, we'll see some releases then.

The band hasn't approved the remastering and release of their classic albums. That isn't the same as saying No to any Quads.
Time will tell if the situation on the artist approval changes.

True, but the Quads can't be released without also remastering and reissuing the stereo mixes of those classic albums too, so until they agree to that, there's no chance of the Quad mixes getting released either. Shame… :(

I'd go along with just using the existing mastering on the redbook layer. Would that help? Then all that would be remastered would be the SACD layer.

I don't think there's ever been a situation where Audio Fidelity have used an existing (re)master for the rebook CD layer, and even if they did, they would still need artist and record label approval before doing any of this, and that seems to be the biggest obstacle standing in the way of getting many of our favorite albums reissued as SACDs from Audio Fidelity.

No worries with Spectrum, krab. That one's spot on.

I'm not so concerned with mastering, nor channel assignment, as I am authoring. I wonder if an SACD authoring person or business lost a nice account over several screw-ups in that area.

Even if they did, they would not boast of it. As a matter of fact, there has been a title of two which listeners claimed dupe from standard CD, and then tweaked to sound different. One of those heated debates that resulted in many deleted posts and warnings of suspensions if one more peep is said about it..

Everything is not exactly as it seems, don't you know that yet?

That's true. In the meantime, there are artists and record labels that are licensing their albums for reissues and remastering in stereo and surround.
So work continues with them for now.

Here's an artist I don't think has been mentioned: Jose Feliciano. He had several Quad albums on RCA and he's still pretty well known. I've never heard the Quads myself, but I have many stereo albums by him and I think the musicianship and his voice is great. Would definitely be a candidate for the 'maybe' pile!

I don't have any inside info or anything, but Feliciano's stuff seems like it would be in the realm of Dutton Vocalion after their release of all those other RCA easy listening titles. The Feliciano quads, like their other easy listening titles, are excellent discrete mixes if you like that sort of music.

Nice find...and that's probably a mock up...I hope AF doesn't start down the road of including "booklets"...I don't need or want a 56 page booklet...I'm probably in the minority in this aspect...but that could start down the road to "box sets"...I like the fact that the previous releases were just the music discs...I don't want the expansion to continue...keep it simple..

I'd like the expansion to continue if it meant things like sets with, say, all the Steely Dan Surround mixes in it, or all the SD + Donald Fagen Surround stuff in it.. or a set with all the Doobies Quads in it.. maybe even, if we are really daring to dream, a set with all the EJ 5.1's (including the already released ones with new AF remasters and of course those precious unreleased 5.1 mixes..)

Ah yes indeed frederico,

I too, want very much the UMe mixed/unreleased 5.1 Elton John's and Steely Dan's !!

Can't understand, can't except the fact that they are being withheld !!

Perhaps A.F. (the miracle that they are, and grateful I am for their efforts) can administer a "laxative" so that any or all of these jewels can finally be released. :sun
