I think the Atmos mix outshines the 5.1.
After listening through the first song with some mild disappointment, I noticed the software player was not bitstreaming Atmos, and the Atmos icon was not lit on the AVR.
When switched to the proper mode, it was night and day to me.
A solid 10 for this Heartland Rock album with some adventurous Atmos mixing.

Love to hear him mix Damn The Torpedoes in Atmos!

I too am thrilled with this release. I think the Atmos mix is perfect: there's basically a different instrument in every speaker (including the heights), yet it sounds cohesive and really puts you inside the record. The little details really pop out, like those shaker and tambourine parts up in the rear height channels. Even just the original 10-track LP would have merited a "10" from me, but the 12 bonus tracks are icing on the cake. I hope we can get the other four Petty Atmos mixes on Blu-Ray someday.

My review over at IAA: https://immersiveaudioalbum.com/tom-petty-and-the-heartbreakers-long-after-dark-dolby-atmos/

Yes I agree 💯 here Atmos is much better than 5.1, luckily. I don't find it extremely adventurous but I'm happy that heights are not used neither too much or too little: they support the main speakers in all tracks but they're not too "visible"; and when required they play their discrete parts! I'd call this a cold logical but very spot on mix. Delivers a different feel to this landmark album; I do recommend because here Atmos is at service of music and not viceversa (but don't use to showcase your system😅 there are better mixes for that)

Got this directly from tompetty.com pre-order.

Easy 10 for me.

Everything is balanced in the mix (Atmos ripped to 7.1 for my car) and the material is great. Some gems in the bonus tracks.

If every Petty Atmos mix is this quality, I'm going to buy every single one.

Another ten from Tom. Based on the current cost of some of the other Tom Petty blu-ray audio discs, a great investment as well.

I got this ripped today and ive played the hits so far. It's quite good. Great mix and sonics. Crankable with plenty of discreteness. (5.1.4 system) When I told my son (a big Petty fan) about it, he got all excited saying "there's unheard Petty on this!!!! I replied, " yes, and its all in surround". So full points for content. This will get a high vote from me. Need to listen to more of it.

This is a tough one to rate.
Was going to go with an 8 because I think the album itself is pretty pedestrian and far from his best.
I think many of the bonus tracks are actually better & more visceral.
Wait - shouldn’t I add a point for the fact that all of the bonus tracks are on the blu-ray & in surround?
Well…yes I should!
9 from me…

Fairly ironic. I literally just listened to this half hour ago. I wondered if my vote was too high. I also went down a dark hole thinking what a shame he had to leave us with his drug problems. What a total shame and loss of an amazing talent and unique guy. Is there anyone like Petty? I don't think so. Talent, troubled. Sad. Guess I'll keep my 9, though closer to an 8.5 I suppose.

Yes - agreed on all points.
Even harder to swallow because wunderkind new addition bass player/vocalist Howie Epstein added a lot to this album…only later to be fired by Petty due to his heroin habit…while Petty himself (we would find out later) was doing heroin.
What a mess…
What a shame…
What a loss 🫤
Hoping for more Petty albums in surround 🙏🏼

I said the same thing to my wife about his passing. My daughter got me this for Christmas and I listened to it yesterday. I think it's great. Your assessment is right on.

My daughter gave this to me as a Christmas gift and I listened to the atmos mix yesterday. I saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in Chicago and later in his career in Raleigh and both shows were awesome! I thought the mix was very good, a strong 8. I always liked this album and was surprised that the bonus tracks were also in 5.1 and also that the beach song was included! I like the minimalistic but informative packaging so I gave an overall rating of a 9.

While I don't know Petty's personal drug misuse story, and I'm sorry to read about this, my experience from working with drug users is, if someone is battling to give up an addiction, one of the first steps is to disassociate from others in your life who are also using, this is especially so with illegal drugs. Someone like me may have encouraged him to take this measure. Users deal to other users.

Addl: Plus, if you're trying to give up heroin, you are always at risk of relapsing and an accidental OD due to your tolerance level now likely being less ... plus you may even be dealt a higher dose level than your tolerance due to the shift in dealers. Again though, I don't know Petty's story, but if he was trying to give up, it would have been super wise to get that other user out of his life.

Perhaps.
I do not claim to be an expert or have personal knowledge.
I just remember thinking - couldn’t you get the guy some help instead of cutting him loose?
While you yourself are using?
Seemed hypocritical…but what do I know?
A pity all the way around…
