Be sure to play the speaker setup test. There's some little kids announcing the channels. Pretty cute.

I wanted to own the Boston SACD but I've heard it sounds really bad..

That's ridiculous. I just played this and it sounds excellent. At least as good as anything MFSL or AF puts out. You will like it. I've got a bunch of these so if you want me to mail one out for you to audition let me know.

The Boston SACD is "as good as anything Mobile Fidelity or Audio Fidelity puts out"? Not on my system. :)
But it is some pretty heavy metal. So you don't really expect a lot from it in the first place - regardless of format.

That's what you think heavy metal is? Are you serious? That's just classic '70s hard rock - and one of the best debut albums of all time.

I'm talking about the sound quality of the SACD. It's definitely not "as good as anything Mobile Fidelity or Audio Fidelity puts out".

i'm not sure i'd even call it 'hard' rock....but definitely one of the best debut albums for sure...front to back

i'm wondering if CD would be sufficient? love the album and all this talk has me itching to hear it but not going to pay if sacd isn't somewhat better...

Yep, I'd bet that if one of them released that album today on SACD, it would sound much better for sure.

fwiw I really like the SACD.. a remix from the multi's would be a sure fire way you could improve on whats already out there.. MFSL wouldn't go down that road.. there have been rumours of a Quad mix and an unreleased 5.1 in the past so maybe AF could work their magic and get either one of those mixes out if they do indeed exist?

Great sound quality; very annoying mix!!!!!!!!!

Drums in rear right channel, absolutely stupid choice. This is not a 4 track recording from the 60's. Ridiculous. Totally ruins it for me.

The drums aren't just in the right rear channel, they're stereo imaged between the front right and rear right channel, and the organ similarly on the left side. Seeing as they are basically an organ trio, I think they were trying to take the mixing style of some of the stereo organ trio records from the 60's (stuff like Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, Groove Holmes, etc.) and pulling everything around in to a horsehoe to make it 5.1. Yes, it's not the most satisfying mix ever, but if everything were mixed the same way, life would be pretty dull.

I do wonder about this one (especially since the Cassandra Wilson channel screw up was also an EMI Signature Collection DVD-A) whether it might benefit from a steelydave second guessing the engineer investigation!? :p

I like the disc as well, but I guess I just had a higher expectation when I picked it up about 6 years ago. If there's a quad or if someone will do a 5.1, that would be fantastic. It just begs for a bigger, expanded sound field. I'm amazed that Tom Scholz hasn't pushed for it to be done by now.

I got billed today by Audio Fidelity so that can only mean that the Guess Who and BST are on the way.
Their Christmas SACD (better late never) is supposed to come with this shipment too
