Indeed. In their prime, The Who was a live band without equal. A force of nature. I am as excited for the San Francisco performance as I am for the surround mixes. It's a holy grail that Who fans have been wanting for a long time. (Most of the London performance has been previously released....and it's awesome. The version of "Young Man Blues" is better than the one on Live at Leeds).

I can certainly understand why some people are put off by the $300 price tag. I love Pink Floyd as much as I love The Who and I did not shell out the cash for the 50th anniversary Dark Side of the Moon box set. But I am more than happy to shell out the money for this one as Townshend is giving us a treasure trove of vault material that I am very eager to hear. Had the Floyd done that, they would have gotten my money too.
Live at Leeds, in my opinion is one of the greatest live records ever. A lot of single guitar bands are lacking in their live shows, which is why many hire a second guitarist for tours. The Who is one band that didn't need to. Never saw Zeppelin, but all the live stuff I've heard had me thinking that a second guitar would have added so much to their live sound. But The Who I DID see live (Dec. '75 By Numbers tour), and was in awe of that performance. What a band to see live! Which is why this set has so much material that isn't just filler. It's worth the premium price.

I laughed when I saw the price of the various options that include the blu-ray with Atmos. A very easy hard pass for me. I like the album but don't love it, and I'm so over buying bloated box sets containing large amounts of demos and live material that would likely receive a single spin. I'll be more than satisfied to sample the streaming offering.

I could afford it. But it's more than I want to pay. I also am not that interested in books and gegaws and t shirts.
It's a shame that they didn't make a tchotchke free version. It could have been priced accordingly and packaged in a cd sized packet/box . I understand why some fans might want all that crap, but I have learned through experience that it just sits in the box in a cupboard somewhere taking up space. There is no band for which I want to collect non-music related artifacts anymore. On the plus side, as others have mentioned, at least they didn't package digital and vinyl together.

I stand by what I say, holding in my hand the 1 Blu-ray + 7 CD boxset from The Pineapple Thief which includes 8½ hours of Atmos and 5.1 mixes done by Bruce Soord, which is as good as Steven Wilson, that I paid a third of the price of the Who's Next boxset. It's also the most expensive boxset I ever bought.
You're comparing a Pineapple Thief release to one of the greatest albums of all times?

Could you share a link for that listing? I'm not finding it using Amazon's search.

I screwed up, I am sorry. That was for DSOTM, vinyl with the CD's and Blu-ray. I've been trolling all morning and just mixed a couple of things going from tab to tab on my computer. Plus, sometimes people just see what they want to see!

This is a great point Clint that's been made time and time again. The longer these guys wait, the less of a market they will have. The kids today don't want to listen to 50 year old stuff (did we?), and not only that, they don't buy anything, not even the stuff they love. They only stream it.

Only old farts like us will even pay attention to a box like this, and at our age, we're pretty much retired and on limited incomes.

This stuff should have all come out in the '90s and early '00s
Dave Clark learned that lesson the hard way. By the time he was willing to re-release the DCF titles, most people only wanted a hits collection.

If it's any consolation, when the Who Sell Out boxset [5 RBCDs/2 7" Vinyl discs] which BTW, contained NO surround remixes came out, I declined to jump on it and patience won out when AmazonUS offered it as a lightning deal for 1/2 price with free s/h! That set was ordered in October of 2022 and it is still in stock @ Amazon albeit at a higher price [$130].

I'm sure there will be ample [and NOT limited] amount of the Who's latest extravaganza pressed....so unless you HAVE TO HAVE IT IMMEDIATELY, I'd advise one to wait until the price comes down considerably. Since we waited OVER 50 years for WHO'S NEXT in surround ...... what's a few more months???????

And maybe by then, UMG/The WHO will renege and release a stand alone BD~A with perhaps a couple of remastered RBCDs in a more sensible/affordable configuration!

I wanted to say the same... I only want the Blu-Ray Atmos mixes (about 2 Albums (original+Bonus)) compared with The Pineapple Thief (7 Atmos albums).
But after reading so many recent posts... OMG, I will say just "me too"?

For a decision of this magnitude I would suggest going to the local pub...I'm sure you will get some great input there 🤣

Well, I think This QQ site is the place to gather for great input :)

I would spend that amount of money for sure but the doubts are:

- Will this box reduce the price? could be.
- If I dont buy it now, will I missed it? As with the SDE series? I think that would not be the case.

So far, I'll wait for some days to see what happens.

I haven't heard the set yet, but I'm seeing a fair amount of stuff that's interesting to this die-hard Who fan:

3. Behind Blue Eyes (Version 1) [Take 15, March 16, 1971]**
- The Record Plant material has been long booted and available officially, but this is apparently an alternate take that I never even knew existed.

3. Time Is Passing [Stereo Mix]**
- Released in 1998 on Odds & Sods, this was one channel of the stereo mix. A bootleg had the other channel, and some sync-ups of the two have been done, but this should be the stereo mix from an undamaged tape, finally.

5. Naked Eye [1971 Remake]**
- Rumored to exist, but it was never clear if this was a remake or just tweaking of the 1970 Eel Pie recording. Apparently it's actually a remake.

10. Going Mobile (Alternate Mix)**
- With alternate guitar solo that was heard in the Classic Albums DVD.

3. Heaven And Hell [New Stereo Mix]**
- First time in stereo, ever.

10. Water (IBC Version)**
11. I Don’t Know Myself (IBC Version)**
- I didn't even know these versions existed. Originally recorded at Eel Pie for the unreleased EP; I Don't Even Know Myself was redone again in 1971.

Plus some other unedited mixes that should be interesting.

Looks like Amazon is $299 but it is NOT a preorder so that's the price plus applicable tax. This is more of an Alice Cooper welcome to my nightmare moment for me.

On the bright side, just ordered a Pink Floyd SACD 5.1 DSOTM, used, for $24.50.
How did you find it? Searches on Amazon US bring up nothing, for me. Browser or app. Not even the numbers Ryan posted.
Are you all referring to Amazon UK, maybe?

It's certainly interesting looking back at the activity in this thread over the last year-and-a-half. We start off with folks hoping and praying for a surround mix (comments like "it's a holy grail title"), then there's excitement around the revelation that Steven Wilson would be doing the surround mixes, then panic over some (apparently uniformed) insider's comments over at SHF that the set would not include a Blu-Ray disc, and now the set is finally announced - with the Blu-Ray, no less - and the overall vibe seems to be at its most dour
