As a huge Floyd fan I'd love to see this happen but unfortunately the sad reality is that nobody but James Guthrie will ever touch the Floydian catalog.

Just as no one else but Rich Chycki will touch the RUSH catalogue.
And don't get me wrong, I definitely do not HATE Chycki's mixes, however, I do think Steven Wilson could do it better, and I'm sure the RUSH catalogue would be one he would like to tackle.

We're lucky that Steven Wilson put his mixing hands on King Crimson, Jethro Tull, and now YES, cause if he wouldn't have, we probably would never have seen these releases.
I wish he would've stuck around to remix Trilogy and Brain Salad Surgery for ELP, but hopefully Jakko's mixes can live up to the expectations Steven's already set. :)

Don't even mention this guy in the same sentence as Steven Wilson. He's at the top of my shit list for worst 5.1 mixing engineers. :howl
I still have a gut feeling that the band members did not give Chycki the freedom to mix the Rush albums the way he would have wanted to. Listen to Trapeze: The Collection and you will see that he knows how to mix 5.1.

I wouldn't say that Rush are totally beholden to Richard Chycki - the stereo remix of Vapor Trails that's coming out shortly was done by David Bottrill, best known for his work with Tool.

I will have to admit, I thought the BD 5.1 version of Moving Pictures was pretty decent. I gave it a 10 all around. If I was voting only on the mix. I would have given it an 8. I heard a couple of the other albums he did, especially Signals, and based those on my decision that he must have been smoking something.

This is question that haunts those of us who worship true discrete 5.1 mixing.

Was the band against discrete mixing? or Did the mixer do a poor job? I suppose with 5.1 there are two schools of thought:

1. To put support information(matrix, echo, or rehashing of the front l/r channels..). in the surrounds/center.
2. To mix freely and assign instruments directly in any channel that suits the mixing artist.

Having heard true discrete mixes by SW like Tarkus or In The Court Of The Crimson King, Aqualung... I am so hooked/addicted it is hard to survive, quite frankly.@:

Clearly some musicians are afraid of the discrete mix. Pink Floyd has stated they vetoed the DSOTM 4.0 mix for sale simply becasue they didn't think
there was enough music to spread out over more than 2.0. This postition had nothing to do with technology or mixing technique. It was simple insecurity.

Hearing Tarkus or Captain Fantastic and THEN hearing RUSH - Signals, makes me want to weep bitterly thinking about what could have happend
if RUSH hed been mixed discretely(yes, Moving Pictures is the best mix of all the RUSH...)

So... maybe the band were the ones to not see the light of full discrete mixing? Actually.. in the performing of music, you live your lfe in mono. You need to hear your instrument in the mix so you can simply play it well. "Listening/enjoying" music has nothing to do with performing and is a whole different animal. As a hobbyist musician/song writer/recorder myself I think maybe the mixing/processing is best left to the engineer pros and the musicians should worry about performing.

Certainly Pink Floyd never would have developed into their mega-world status without Alan Parsons.

I humbly submit it would be a tragic mistake for any musician to be afraid or not to allow full discrete mixing.

As far as Steven Wilson doing RUSH... My take is that he is by far the best recognized 5.1 mixer in a small but growing business. I would guess that reputation & perceived value to a product for sale would outweigh any engineer turf battles. So yeah, I could see Steven doing Hemispheres or any other recording, if the band themselves believed in his technique in mixing. The more people fall in love with Steven's work, the bigger the market gets and he does more stuff, and what he doesn't have time for his techniques would be closely adhered to by whoever steps in. That's why I think Jakko will deliver a fantastic job with Brain Salad Surgery. I can't effin wait for Trilogy...

At this point, and with his rather already large discography, I wouldn't care if Steven Wilson put out another record if he went "Full Time" for a few years mixing all the classics and favorites in surround sound. :sun

When I read this, it reminded me instantly of George Harrison explaining why they (the Beatles) thought it was a crazy notion to mix and release their recordings in stereo.

I second that although I don't think this would be a viable financial option for him.:D

Okay, but that's like saying a top mixing engineer doesn't get paid much money. Plus, look at all of his residuals. ;)
SW stated that he hardly makes any money from the 5.1 projects and that the only reason that he does it is because of the passion he has for those projects.

What a waste. Not even true DSD output.

The awesomeness of this collection is the SuperAudio remastering.. Those of us with SACD capability know the magic that comes with the super audio full spectrum of audio layers.. hidden gems of crispness, lower bass tones and unique definition and depth. My SCAD version of Queen's Night at the Opera is unbelievable. Get it before your hearing goes :).

SACD's are 1bit dsd with a sampling frequency of 2.8mhz, not 96/24bit, so the SACD's will be down sampled.
