Received my Svengali replacement copy yesterday. It still won't rip (using MakeMKV on a Mac): read errors. But I played it through on my Oppo, in both quad and stereo, and heard no skipping. I've never had read errors ripping any other Blu-ray title, using the same hardware and software.
I just got around to ripping my pile of purchases from the last year or so and I also had issues ripping the Svengali disc. I am using MakeMKV on a Windows PC. So far the only one of the quadios to give me a problem. I'm curious if you ever figured out a workaround for this. Only the first track (Thoroughbread) is compromised on mine, I am able to rip everything starting with track 2.

I found that a couple of the Quadio’s simply would not open in MakeMKV, Sundown and The Hissing of Summer Lawns being two that gave me issues. I found that actually making a full disc backup using MakeMKV and then opening the index file from the resulting BDMV folder opened it up right away and I could rip with no problems.

No workaround for me, I just gave up on ripping it. As soon as MakeMKV opens my disc, it reports errors and won't go further, so I can't rip any of the tracks.

Duke Ellington
just picked this up on discogs for a great price. Looking forward to this one!

Please don't give up. You can do it. I have been ripping discs for years and have had a few hiccups, but have always fixed.
I bet you have tried everything and frustration is high, but I'll leave a couple of notes for you.
Blu Ray ripping:
Use up to date MKV.
I had a problem where Blu Ray discs where starting to be hit and miss on ripping. I purchased the newest version external BD player
AMAZON PIONEER PLAYER, I purchased this July 11, 2023 my second and solved all my problems that my first had.
I see now there is a AMAZON NEWER VERSION I would purchase this now if I needed to.

I was using Windows 10, now using Windows 11 (no special settings in Windows is needed), and my ripping Blu Ray experience is still the same positive experience on all discs.
I hope this helps. There is of course more after the initial rip, tagging and playing and I won't bog you down with all that.

Thanks marpow, I appreciate you trying to help. But I'm content to just listen to this by playing the Blu-ray disc on my surround system. I was really only trying to rip it for the stereo mix, to put on my phone for car or headphone listening. I can always stream it if I really want to do that.

I have a Mac, not a Windows PC. I have a high-quality external Blu-ray drive that doesn't have issues with other discs. I always use the most current version of the MakeMKV and DVD Audio Extractor software for ripping Blu-rays. I have been able to rip all the other Quadio Blu-rays that I've tried.

I’m on a Mac. Since 2014 I’ve been using a Samsung external blu-ray drive. But a couple of years ago it had some trouble on certain discs. (Using MakeMKV) Sometimes cleaning them helped even if they were new and didn’t seem dirty. Other times not, though.

But I figured after about a decade, maybe it was coming to the end of its life, so I found a $55 drive on Amazon. It was a Wbacon. Odd name, but by golly it worked. Between the two (the Samsung is still truckin’ along), one of them will do a rip on just about any disc and if both can’t even after cleaning, I figure it’s gotta be the disc.

While problems are rare in general, it is often a Quadio that’s causing me to need the second drive.
