I just have to ask. For those of you that got the SACD sets; Comparing the SACD to the DTS on the DVD, which sounds better and is the extra jack for the SACD's worth it? I read the post by quadrofis (on the LAMB thread) that he preferred the DVD. Also Guy Robinson gives a good review of the DTS 96/24 however he does not have the SACD for comparison. What about the rest of you folks? Theoretically the SACD's should sound better, but the previous box sets proved that not to be the case. Just wondering if the extra cost is justified.

(y) (n) Anyone?

Not everyone thinks that way. Hmm....the name looks familiar.....

Yes...that's true. I think we all know Neil's take on this.

Personally, in general I prefer DVD-A to SACD, but SACD vs DTS, I normally prefer SACD. I must add that while I do have DTS-ES, I do NOT have DTS 96/24 (yet). Unless the Oppo 980H has it (then I do) but it's not hooked up yet (long story).

My comment here is specifically on the Genesis sets. I am glad to hear that the recordings are less compressed and have more dynamic range than the previous ones.

I have listened to the entire music part of the set and I am very happy with the entire thing in DTS 96/24.

The Oppo 980H will send 96/24 over HDMI because that's the way that I am doing it. However, my receiver does the conversion and displays DTS 96/24.
I would imagine that if you can't output it in 24 bit then the SACD would make a difference over the lossy DTS core. Otherwise, I would think the DTS 96/24 is the way to go for the money. I would be interested to see if anyone thinks the SACD's are better as well. Most of the comparisons I have heard on the net actually say the DTS sounds better.

I have the UK SACD & DVD (pal) version and am in Australia. I have listened extensively to all discs in the SACD in stereo, SACD multi channel and the DVDs in DTS 96/24. Before I give my judgement - let me declare my biases. I usually prefer stereo to multi channel music and I enjoy Dark Side of the Moon equally in stereo and multi channel SACD, I prefer ELP's Brain Salad Surgery on DVD Audio (multich) much more to any CD mix (even a Japanese remaster). You know where I am coming from - I am biased towards stereo but am happy to give multi channel its recognition where I think it is deserved. I am very impressed with this boxset. No matter which version (SACD or DVD) you listen to, they all have a crystal clear clarity of sound. Overall, I would give the SACD stereo 9.5/10 and SACD multi and the DVD 96/24 9/10 - there is not much in it in my view. Specifically, with the lamb.... on SACD stereo the bass is just so clear and rumbles through the floor, Peters vocals are outstanding and the mix is excellent. With the DVD 96/24 (and SACD multi), the bass is not quite as punchy (particuarly on Back in New York City - literally shakes the floor and walls in stereo but not quite there in multi). However, the stereo and multi are a different listening experience. I love the slide show on DVD and the audio mix is superb - there are instruments and effects that you hear that are not apparent on the stereo version. For me, I'm glad I have the option to listen to a high quality audio mix in SACD or on DVD 96/24. I guess it depends on the gear you have and whether you prefer stereo or mult channel music - if you have good gear and are equally disposed to stereo or multi channel music ( I have Marantz SA11S1 SACD, Marantz SACD/DVD audio DV9500, Toshiba HD DVD XED1, Krell KAV 400xi integrated stereo amp, EAD PM 500 amp, Marantz 80003 AV processor, VAF i93 fronts & VAF i91 centre/surrounds), I would highly recommend the SACD set.

Thanks for the detailed findings for playback with your system. Your perspective differs from many who post here in terms of surround-centric listening motives. It's good to have all these opinions on such an important release.

I would add that even with better equipment, your review reminds me there are (unfortunately) infinite variances in the setup and room characteristics. If the bass doesn't match output wise in the 5.1 version to the 2.0 stereo, there is every chance that this might be something on our side rather than the mix itself. Is your sub engaged identically identically in 2.0 as it is in 5.1? Is there a phase issue introduced somewhere that diminishes the bass? Is this something we can ever really be sure about?

Not questioning your comments, just contemplating the differences we all encounter that fuel our observations as to how we gauge what we hear. I'm holding out for the SACD set myself. This music is so important to me that I certainly expect to buy it a few more times in the time I have on Earth.

Okay, I am not a fan of the other 2 boxes. They are basically unlistenable at loud volumes and all the life has generally been sucked out of them with compression and everything turned up to max. After listening to Lamb and Selling England in DTS 96/24 I can say that I love the mixes on these discs. The details brought out in especially the Lamb disc is incredible. Some of the dramatic moments are however mixed at a lower volume than I am used to. For instance, at the beginning of Carpet Crawlers when the drums come in they are buried in the mix. The title song on this discs starts with all speakers in use and has to be heard to be appreciated. The bass is perfect throughout the disc. The cymbals are still a tad slushy in sections, but I can actually listen to this one fairly loud without fatigue setting in. I am very happy with the DTS 96/24. I can't see what SACD would bring to the table over this. It's very clean and has none of that murkiness associated with lossy audio. It is 24 bit afterall though.

Guy,
Wow, I was going to write a review/synopsis but now don't have to. :) Your take on this boxset, and especially Lamb, versus the earlier fatigue-riden sets, is spot on! And this time, due to impatience and the knowledge that DTS 24/96 ain't a bad thing at all, went with the US DVD versions. Very very nice, with solid bass and a steady rock-solid mix. My only complaint is that the originals still had a suck out in the lower midrange and it's apparent here too. The remixes can only do so much with the master tapes, etc. Overall, well done...and I haven't opened SEBTP yet!!

HMV.JP now lists the box at the equivalent of $183.00

It also lists each individual title as SACD/DVD for 4800y for singles and 6000yen for "The Lamb..."

that's about $51 for singles and $64 for the double

OK, I've been waiting like many of you for the SACD/NTSC and figured I'd go the Japan route since I'm tired of waiting. But, I get to the site and its all Japanese. I did find the English page but the checkout and the individual links all go back to Japanese. How do I know what I'm actually ordering? Its definitely confusing (as if trying to sort out all the versions or this release hasn't been confusing enough). Any tips on navigating the Japanese?

Appears to have ticked back up as the dollar slid since then: 228.48 deal and 253.86 regular price...

I've just digested the DTS DVD version here and it is a wonderful set. It is my MUST have item this year even more so now. 12/23 is only a week away now, maybe some positive signs will appear this week to confitm that story.

Just to confirm, I got my box at the link that Jon posted from HMV Japan in about four days from order. The box was indeed NTSC. Great service and so far, I'm enjoying the discs.

My order arrived last week as well. It ended up at $204.67 with shipping.

Unfortunately, my wife nabbed it and won't let me open till Christmas :(

Since Christmas is a reworking of the Pagan holiday on the solstice maybe you could convince your spouses to let you have your discs on the 21st. Four days is four days...

I agree I also like to do a bit of pilaging on Good Friday but instead evert thing closes early. A hex on organised relegion.

For those still looking for the NTSC version and would rather order domestic, CD Universe just e mailed me that they are now taking preorders for the import with the sacd discs. They expect it on Dec. 23 for 213.09.
Phil.

Link? I can't find any reference on their site.

I can't find the link either. Not sure why. Maybe they didn't have time to enter it before the weekend. This was an e mail that they sent me which I already deleted since I already have this title.
I was curious to see if I made a mistake so I checked the other two dealers I get e mail from. Acoustic Sound does not list it and Elusive Disc does but their price is 229.99. Same release date of Dec 23rd.
If CD Universe does not announce it by Monday then maybe a phone call would be in order. Phil.

Happy Solstice everyone!

When your wives aren't looking go ahead and tear into those musical treasures :) You can tell them I said it was OK.
