I've been jonesing for this

ever since I saw this back in December of 2018

Finally found it at a good price; it's a winner for me too!

P.s. Look how far Mike has come with his videos! Stay Surrounded, comrade!

Uh... I actually checked. Ears to speakers. Big stereo philosophy, but occasional discrete elements. If they did it by upmixing, without the multis, I can't say, but it's pleasant enough.

well i'll certainly try it again if it makes you happy Baggy and i didn't mean to cause offence.. but for now i stand by my findings posted here in this very thread last Summer (its fake shit!) 😄

i'm not anti-upmix at all but an upmix can never be rightly described as discrete, as good as they get they're just not and its a bitter pill to swallow at times because there are some really great upmixes out there and in many cases its all we have in Surround (such as this Robert Plant DVD, poor as it is) but there'll always be some degree of compromise with bleed, artefacting, etc.

tbh i wish they had just done this DVD in Stereo. speaking of which, did you try the Stereo on this thru something like PLII Music? i haven't yet but i'll bet you get as good results as the DTS 5.1 on the disc, maybe even better!? something to fiddle about with on the long Winter nights methinks! 🧐

No offense, Adam. Just didn't have the same experience you did. For instance, I rarely here any vocal in the surrounds. Often, keys and other supportive parts are dominant there. Vocal and snare are drier in the center than in the fronts. Yes, it's big stereo style.
No, I didn't take time to run the stereo through an onboard upmixer. Willing to try sometime though.
If they fooled me, they fooled me! No worries.

ah that's all good then! phew! 🤩

oh i'm happy to be fooled, its when i wake up and realise i've been hoodwinked i can get a wee bit peeved! 😬😉😆

honestly, i'd rather all upmixes on official releases were outlawed!! we can do it better ourselves for free!!

...unless its like one or two tracks of an album where they've got multitracks for all the other material (i'm thinking something like the "Aja" situation?) except those 1 or 2 songs and its all genuine surround then fudge it, do an upmix on that song or two is fair game!

or.. if they're done by a truly competent person on a good system (like Steven Wilson and Penteo)

otherwise, i say "labels! leave it be in 2-channel and we can make it 3-4-5-6-7-77 channels at home!"

so it would appear! i'm very happy for them in their confused state! 🥳 😉
FWIW, I got an awesome deal on the set, am in it for the 8 Robert Plant albums I haven't heard and have been enjoying the videos.
Our little back and forth did get me thinking today that it is entirely possible to create a real 5.1 mix without any truly discrete parts.
All that takes is to leave the panning of all parts at less than 100%. I'm not sure that's what happened here, but that's how it sounds, on first listen.
Either way, I found watching and listening to the videos (LOUD) to be quite engaging and enjoyable.

i think you may have hit the jackpot and that kind of hokey-cokey jiggery-pokery is what they did! 👍
its semi-effective but it's still tantamount to surround fraud in my eyes!! 😬

tbh i knew his first few solo albums fairly well already before getting the set and none of those stood out in the 5.1 as having the kind of sonic upgrade you often get by going back to the multitracks to do a surround mix. ah i dunno Baggy.. there's so many discs that are knockout for real 5.1 that i don't get time to listen to properly as it is that i'm kinda more brutally dismissive now of the one's that don't tick the boxes, if you know what i mean 😉

I feel ya, mate. 9 Lives DVD is the least immersive of the video sets I've been going through lately.
Fortunately, I have a kick-ass stereo in my car and I'm really looking forward to BLASTING these RP albums. I only know Fate of Nations, which I love.
