"Songs from the Big Chair" by Tears for Fears (24/96 PCM 5.1 Blu-Ray)
This time I have switched the center channel to 'none' which routes everything from that channel to Front L&R. Sounds so much better this way as it amps up the lead vocals to the right level they should be at.

Damn, I'll have to try that. :)

"War Child" by Jethro Tull (DTS 96/24 5.1 DVD-V)
I still have the center channel switched off for this mix, and it also improves the vocal to music balance considerably, though not as much as it does on the Tears for Fears disc. :)

The question arises, Ryan, are you utilizing three exactly matching front speakers?

I like that idea, but for War Child it's kind of a cheat as it comes with a quad mix.Tears for Fears though-interesting (y):)

No. The center channel does not have the same design as the other four channels (front & back L/R) but that does not matter because all channels have been calibrated to the same decibel level. It's a problem with certain mixes, not with my system.
Back when I had the center channel louder than it should have been, certain Steven Wilson mixes sounded great, but as soon as I did a proper decibel level calibration of all channels (which in my case meant lowering the center channel level to match the level of the fronts) the vocal disappeared significantly on certain mixes of his. When I would switch between the stereo and 5.1 mix, it would become especially apparent.
So by switching the center channel 'off' for certain mixes, now the vocal is back to the level it should be at, and this is also true of the "Relayer" surround mix by Yes which I am listening to now.

Did some matrix quad cd listening last evening.

I've detailed my problem with the inability to include a matching center in my main system (a 102" screen in middle and 2 gigundus r/l speakers w subs) but in my summer home I'm using two B&W 802 Nautilus in the fronts with a non~matching center designated by B&W as the 'prescribed' center. Well, let me tell you....I was playing the three channel Nat King Cole AP SACDs with the center naturally dedicated to Cole's vocals and guess what......I switched to Stereo and it sounded MUCH more natural.

The center ruined the continuity because it didn't exactly match the l/r full range 802's. B&W Center: http://www.hificorner.co.uk/media/c...df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/h/t/htm21.png NO match for the 802s, IMO.

A word to the wise........

Yes, but the 70s Quad mix of "War Child" is a terrible mix IMHO when compared against Steven Wilson's 5.1 mix.

Maybe for some, but I like the way the quad mix was done by Robin Black.I think it surpasses his quad mix of Aqualung and like the way he used some "x" channel mixing. I of course had and still do have them in CD-4. "Had"refers to: no longer can I demodulate CD-4.:violin

I find some of Steven Wilson's mixes to be center channel dominant and suspected that was why you turned off or lowered his center to hear a quad mix ?
I still need an in line vol ctrl for my centre speaker, not just S.W. 5.1 but some others as well.:music

Chicago - Chicago Transit Authority from the Quadio box set that was delivered today. Apart from Chicago III I don't know any of these, so it's going to be a fun journey!

Actually, I switched the center channel to 'none' on those mixes because whatever was routed to the center (mainly the vocal) was too low, and if you have something equally loud in two speakers, its perceived loudness will double (or more specifically the level will increase by 3dB) so by switching the center to 'none', everything from that channel is routed to front L&R, which was exactly what was needed to bring the vocal up to the right level on those mixes.

Anyway, now I'm listening to "Trilogy" by ELP. This time the center speaker is on as it's integrated much better with the other channels on this mix (mixed by Jakko Jakszyk) than the previous SW mixes I was listening to. :)

Still waiting :( SpinCDs said my copy will appear soon, they were waiting for the corrected version. By the time it arrives I'll have forgotten I'd ordered it!

Re the Beach Boys are the encoded tracks just the ones from Sunflower and Surf's Up?
