Countdown To Ecstasy - Steely Dan

"...i'm reading last year's papers,
although i don't know why..."
:QQlove

... oh i adore this album... its like hooking up with an old friend you haven't seen for ages and thinking "hey why don't i see more of you, you're F-A-B!!"

would one of CBS' Quad boys have done it differently? probably.. there'd be a lot less reverb, I wager! ;)
ahh... we could sit and pick apart the Quad mixes foibles and flaws all day long but its more fun to sit and enjoy it for what it is... and its still discrete-o-matically lovely!

Well I went for some Crimson last nite , so.....

Me, well I wouldn't change a tick on that Dan . It is what it is I reckon.
But we'd all love to glom onto a new 5.1 mix (and a hirez of Countdown in quad ,, plus dee udders of course )

These are so very loooooooong overdue for re-issue , almost criminal.

Oh oh.

Now you got me on a Dan Span .

So tonite I'll start with this little surround jewel.

Donald Fagen -Morph The Cat. DVDA

And work my way chronologically backwards in Dan time . :) Steely Dan..... all the time....... every time. Superb Surround .

Dig it fizzy, sounds like a hell of a ride, can I come?

Some of it is definitely too wet for me, but I love it also (Your Gold Teeth -my fav), needs the loving hand of E.S.

I have actually given a fair amount of thought to how ES' take on it might sound, based on the style of his released Steely/DF 5.1 mixes. It would definitely be sonically superior and probably much more faithful to the original in terms of studio effects (reverb).

However, I'm doubtful it would be as discrete or daring as the quad mix is. ES usually just puts horns, backing vocals, and some rhythm guitar in the rear speakers on his Steely Dan mixes. The quad mix does some really cool stuff with the vocal mix, often splitting Fagen's high and low vocals between the front and rear speakers. There's also a lot of lead parts in the rear speakers- guitars and flutes in "Bodhisattva", lead guitar in "The Boston Rag", guitar solos in "My Old School", etc.

I'm pretty content with the quad, there are really only two major issues for me: the excessive echo ("King Of The World" in particular really suffers) and the missing vocal bits at the end of "The Boston Rag". My copy of the QS LP sounds a bit mushy, but decodes very well. The Q8 with a little NR work in audacity sounds better than it has any right to!

For me, the one that really needs the ES touch is Pretzel Logic. The quad is terribly unexciting on that one, and it's been confirmed that ES completed that mix over 10 years ago (the rest were never even attempted). I'm not holding my breath though...
