Hi all, I'm looking for buy a DVD-audio or blu-ray version of Rush's Moving Pictures. This new boxset is way out of my price range. I was interested in getting this one found here. I see it on different sites and the prices vary from $11 to over $100. Are they all the same? some say DVD audio and some say blu-ray. are they both the same or two different versions?

Deep Discount has the CD/DVD-A for $11.75. That's got to be as low as it's going to get...

I just looked because I assumed it would be everywhere and shipped to me was $308. Still absolutely insane. Obviously they're trying to mark up their most popular album, but this is no better than the AFTK's box set and I got that for around $150 I think. Two extra vinyl records, a crap model car and some drumsticks shouldn't add an extra $150 to the final number...

With all due respect to the discerning members of this forum, it is time to PARK the inner skeptic for a moment, and simply treasure the moment we have to enjoy a small sliver of new Rush. In the surround community, no less! Sadly, Neil is dead. I can’t get used to it. There are no more tours. Ever. Think about it… And perhaps throw a few bones to the greatest band of all time to hear some innovative new mixes of their, yes, greatest album (sorry 2112). I will. Sad it’s not Steven Wilson, but I would rather support this cause than the super limited Tears for Fears atmos disc that no one can buy of a new album that probably, let’s be real, sucks.

Moving Pictures, folks.

I’m in. All the way.

very well said Birrrdy !!! It was a tough pill to swallow, 300 clams for a boxset. But - as you said, its Moving Pictures. One of the best rock albums ever made. And all those souvenir goodies will look cool in the mancave !! And ? I gambled thinking --"perhaps Richard will find his way this time with his 5.1". We shall see -

if only the model car was better quality. If it was a beautiful diecast the $300 would be worth it because that song held such significance in my youth.

Thanks, but is there only one version of the original set? Is there a version with DVD audio and one version with blu-ray? Or are they the same thing?

We're human beings, it's what we do. There is nothing so awesome that it cannot be complained about.

I actually think they are leaving money on the table. Most of the fans that are buying the SDE would buy it regardless of what's in it. If they offered a stand alone blu-ray, they would lose a few SDE sales, but I think that loss would be more than made up in the sales of the BRD.

Alex liked it. Not sure if Geddy heard it.
I'm happy that Rush is back to surround releases after Permanent Waves, but not sure how much I value Alex's opinion. My thought is that if he was a big fan of surround, the new Envy of None release would have a surround version.

I'm totally with you here, I'm always open minded for a new version of mixes of this album regardless of the engineer, etc.

HOWEVER, I would be in for a box set, but for $300 to get stuff that will 99% sit in the box and never see the light of day, I just can't justify it. I wish they had planned for something in the middle of all of this...perhaps a box set with the blu ray, the 3 cd with the concert and the "tchotchkes" for like $150. I'd be handing over that cash right now.

I'll have to settle for streaming this on Apple Music.

Hate that you have to buy a big box loaded with vinyl that I will never use just get the Blu-Ray.
‘So I ended up just buying the original DVDA once again (since my other copy is old and in my Acura TL for years) and just enjoy that mix (which isn’t bad) on my big stereo and call it a day.
If the Blu-Ray ever gets a stand alone release, then I will buy that.
Also who knows, you might be able to purchase the big box at a discount in a few years.
‘Many of these boxes get discounted eventually (like the Stones Goats Head Soup and Grrrrrr).

I wouldn't pay that ungodly amount even if Steven Wilson was mixing it. It's really ridiculous. The Beatles didn't even charge that much. When did Rush become KISS with their price gouging?

I'm still POed that I couldn't get the SW mix of Farewell. Instead, I'm stuck with all the crappy mixes this guy did of the Rush albums...and now they want people to shell out 3-400 more in the hopes that maybe he has learned something from his other failed mixes? Thanks, but no thanks.

In fairness, Moving Pictures was probably the best of his mixes, but still lackluster.

I find this statement all I really needed to read. I will purchase. (a Rush catalog first!),

A fourth bonus disc is a Blu-ray Audio disc with the core album newly mixed from the original multi-tracks in Dolby Atmos (a Rush catalog first!), Dolby TrueHD 5.1, and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound as done by noted producer/engineer Richard Chycki, alongside the previously available PCM Stereo mix.

I'm happy that Rush is back to surround releases after Permanent Waves, but not sure how much I value Alex's opinion. My thought is that if he was a big fan of surround, the new Envy of None release would have a surround version.

If Alex was even a lukewarm fan of surround, he never would have let Chycki’s mixes be associated with the band.

In all respect to @birrrdy!, “innovative” is not a word that will ever be associated with a Chycki surround mix.

If you are just in it for the surround……
It is already a lost cause in my book to pay over $300 for a bloated box of cheesy memorabilia in the HOPES of getting a good surround mix of one album.

No, I feel better supporting the other cause.
A band that at least has put significant thought into who mixes their music and the quality of the mix. Not to mention, probably fighting the label in getting at least a limited run of a stand alone surround mix at a reasonable price.

Maybe the new songs are good, maybe not but I at least know that someone that “gets surround” built the mix.

A better proposition to me than hearing awesome songs sound worse than the original stereo mixes.

Frankly, it seems to be an insult that even bands like Kiss & Guns and Roses have put more thought into the quality of a surround mix in their bloated, cash grab SDE.

This quote from the Moving Pictures release page gets me:

"Finally, the sixth configuration, the Dolby Atmos Digital Edition, is the digital equivalent of Richard Chycki’s masterful Atmos mix of all seven tracks from the original album".

Nothing I've heard from him before could be considered close to "masterful". Although, to be fair to the marketing group, it probably wouldn't sell many sets if it said it was the "digital equivalent of Richard Chycki's disappointing Atmos mix..." LOL!

Anyway, I am going to err on my pessimistic side and wait for the reviews before thinking about ordering this one.

If the two Atmos mixes that have been streaming are indicative of the new album mix, no thanks...
Don't make me sad. I hate to think they are going to blow this one after the "lost tapes" fiasco meaning no 5.1 for Permanent Waves. I still weep a little when I drop 2112 in, the compressed feel for what should be a grand and epic piece is painful. Moving Pictures has so much potential for surround I'm sure I'll puy the extortion regardless and remain ever hopeful.

‘I actually finally getting the Steven Wilson mix of Farewell when it showed up on Amazon at a greatly reduced price a few years ago. Grabbed it while I could.
That one never did get a stand alone release. :(

There are pure novelty memorabilia things sold sometimes and that's all well and good. They used to sell picture disc vinyl. (Still do.) The fidelity is compromised and here it is with the music supposedly being the focus. Some people will collect every last item ever released/sold by a band and that can be impressive too. Not everyone collects for best fidelity copy of the recording.

This blown off, no attention to nuance remix aesthetic where you get this sanitized polite scratch mix by someone clearly disinterested in the music when the original mixes had character and expertise is insulting to the music... And that's the best case! It's almost worse that these feature reasonably professional fidelity at a glance. It hits like hearing a cover or a remake of a movie. I know this is subjective but it's kind of obvious when someone phones something in vs having a genuine different take that might be controversial.

Bonus tracks are always cool. Even when they're not! It's additional material for anyone looking for a deep dive. Presenting a remix as a deluxe end all be all is a hell of a statement and one might want to have a good mix before doing something like that. You're thinking you're about to get better seats for a favorite show and you get treated to a remake. You buy the deluxe iMax ticket for Ghostbusters and find they're playing Ghostbusters 3 on that screen!

Remixes like this and most of the circa 2000 DVDA release surround remixes along with them can just be flushed. They all hit like they were grudgingly produced to fill the surround mix slot on the disc rather than genuine interest in digging into the material.

Thanks, but is there only one version of the original set? Is there a version with DVD audio and one version with blu-ray? Or are they the same thing?

The blu-ray set must be pretty expensive by now; haven't checked it in a long time, but yes the packages were the same for each format. Go for it, man - there's also a 15% discount code available (HEARTS). Not sure what the conditions are for it, but it's doing well for my order (over $25).

sorry I don't mean to be so petty about this. but you said "for each format". does that mean there is an edition that has DVD audio and another edition that has blu-ray?
