The bigger story is that 18.1.12 setup. Holy hell
A friend of mine went to a listening party/session of the latest PT in LA, on one of L-Acoustics and told me that they didnt crank it up as he expected, followed by a compliment that my equipment / HT comes too close to this, and I dont have a 18.1.12 setup hehe

9.1.6 is the maximum # of discrete channels you can get with Atmos, so it's really just that but with each channel reproduced by two physical speakers instead of one - so there are two speakers playing the content mean for front left, two for front right, and so on. Having more drivers pumping air probably helps fill out a larger room with sound, but it's not like you're missing out on any extra seperation.

Is that how it works with extra speakers? I figured the extras were placed in-between and only got sent objects that panned past/through them, rather than doubled bed (discrete) channels.

That is how it works, but only up to 9.1.6 (the maximum # of channels that the Dolby Renderer and Reference Player apps can monitor out). Once you get past that point, I imagine it's just stretching the 15.1 surround image across more speakers by duplicating the content of each channel. I've never listened to or mixed on a setup with more than 15 speakers though, so I can't say for sure.

18.1.12 surround sound system ( speakers/channels ? ) is perhaps what is needed in a room that has several rows of seats to accommodate many listeners, and have enough Atmos effects on all or the majority of seats. Like in a big theater room.

In my house, I have 9.1.4 for my single MLP, just for one seat. So proportionally, I may have more speakers per seat than that L-Acoustics Steven Wilson show. :ROFLMAO:

I also "feel" better the Atmos effects with the eyes closed... Redirecting the brain computing power to the hearing system :)

The 'trouble' for me is that these playback sessions use the highest possible spec; who on Earth has a 18.1.12 playback system? But I expect it was fun to be there.

For me, I welcome this kind of news knowing that there are some who are trying to use the capabilities of Atmos with speaker setups, rather than just mixing for headphones.
I guess that will keep the spirit of some mixers/producers to use the maximum possibilities of Atmos

For sure, the more out there keeping the excitement spark alive with the engineers, etc; the better.
Both excitement and ho-hum emotion/attitude can be very contagous, we've sadly seen the ho-hum faction run over a couple generations of surround, don't let it happen again. ;)
