I thought I'd told this story here someplace before, but couldn't find it, so stop me if you've heard before
It was a dark and stormy evening in 1975 that I saw my one and only "The Who" concert.
I was stationed at SAC headquarters in Omaha Nebraska at the time and about 4 of us were on our way down 80 in the late afternoon to Des Moines IA where the concert was to be that night. The skies were near pitch black because there were tornadoes happening all around; we could even see two separate tornadoes far into the distance (luckily) ripping up the landscape as we travelled.
This was the show with Toots & the Maytals opening (probably my first taste of Ska / Reggae music)-
December 2, 1975 Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Des Moines, IA (supported by Toots & The Maytals)
Don't recall much about Toots & The Maytals and the crowd was pretty cold towards them IIRC as we were all amped up to hear The Who rock music!
As you can imagine in that day, the air was filled with pot smoke, and it was easy to get a non-contact high off of it.
The Who finally came out and started rocking, maybe starting with "Squeeze Box" in support of their new album "The Who by Numbers."
Most of the show though was them playing the heck out of their old hits with Pete doing windmill chord swings and jumping all over the place, Roger swinging his mic high in the air, Entwistle with his unique way of playing his Bass and Moon being a madman on drums.
The real interesting part of the night was about halfway through their show the power goes out (remember the tornadoes?) and stays out for maybe 45 minutes. The band took a break during that time but assured us they'd be back ASAP; and they kept their word and played the hell out of the place to finish up the show. I am so grateful I was able to see those lads in their heyday; and it's a night I'll never forget.
So yes I'll be buying this box set, but will be patient and find the best price I can.
Long Live Rock!
