Your recent remixes of King Crimson, Caravan, Jethro Tull and others have been a great way to get back into old classics and hear them with a new freshness. Listening to KC’s ‘Islands’ again with the clarity it deserved was a great moment for me. Are there any plans for further remixes in 2014?

You know about the Yes catalogue?

Is that the whole thing?

Well, Close To The Edge is coming out in October in a new stereo and new surround mix. There’s going to be another album in early 2014… I can’t tell you which at the moment. I’ve done it, but I’m not allowed to tell you [laughs]. Basically, the idea is to do most of the classic Yes albums. For most people, that was the 70s records. So we’re going to do I think all of the 70s records, and that’s obviously a big project if you are a fan of progressive music, or whatever you want to call it. Those bands certainly never called themselves progressive rock bands, but people do call them progressive rock bands nowadays. I like to acknowledge that.

Whatever your taste, if you like this kind of music then you have to consider the Yes catalogue as one of the most important of that whole genre, along with the [King] Crimson catalogue. So it’s exciting to get involved in that, and I’m looking forward to going through as much of that catalogue as possible.

Listening to The Raven, there is almost a fusiony influence to it. Any plans of delving into the back catalogues of 70s fusion records?

I think what you have to think about with surround sound is, realistically, what is there a market for? Unfortunately, there’s not a market for everything.

One of the things about so-called progressive music or the classic 70s album rock is that a lot of people that like that kind of music, tend to be quite interested in high-end audio and surround sound. I’m not sure that’s true of other genres: for example, I don’t think it would be a very good idea to start remixing rap albums in surround sound. Because I don’t believe the people that listen to rap music are that interested in high-end audio and that kind of immersive experience. But it’s certainly something that people who listen to 70s rock music are very interested in – or some of them are, anyway.

Fusion? There are some records I think…I would love to do Bitches’ Brew [Miles Davis] in 5.1, I’d love to do some of the early Mahavishnu Orchestra in 5.1. I think there would be a market for them. But [if] you get into more obscure territory, you’re talking literally about a handful of people that are really interested. So you have to take those things into account.

I'm gonna call the early 2014 Yes release as "Going for the One", but if it's "The Yes Album", I'll be happy with that choice too. If I get those 2 and "Relayer" next year, I'll be a happy panda. :51banana:

I listened to the first Yes LP last night. I forgot how great it is. We know that the next release won't be Fragile. I would think they'd save that one towards the end since it was already released in surround.

Nice news. I hope for Going for the One and Tales from Topographic (this one especially may benefit from a good 5.1 mix as its such a polarizing record)

I don't care....

The Yes Album,
TFTO,
Relayer,
Going for the One,
Tormato,
Drama,
90125,
Big Generator,
Union.....

Ooops maybe I've gone too far...

I would not DARE TOUCH the "Bitches Brew" Quad mix..it's one of those that is SACRED...!!! Like DSOTM...

I hear ya! ..but I still hope SW gets the gig and remixes "Bitches Brew"! the precedent has been set with those Sony ELP DVD-A's he did!

SW + Sony + 5.1 DVD-A = Bitches Brew 5.1...!! :p

how amazing would that be..?!?

Thank you so much for the brilliant info, rt! What a great interview! Has that fella ever got his head screwed on! He SO knows what he's talking about! It's refreshing! (y)

I reckon you'll be safe for 5.1 of all those you seek to attain eternal happy-panda-ness! up til, maybe even including, "Drama" at least from SW's comments..

These Yes 5.1 mixes can't come sooner for me. I'm surprised they don't at least put out 2 at once as they did for ELP a while back.

I wouldn't be surprised if we eventually saw all of these albums released as part of the Panegyric series. Not only have they spent time creating these HD masters for HDTracks but all but one of these albums (Yesshows) will be included in the SACD box set. Even if Steven Wilson doesn't remix all of these, maybe someone else will, like Jakko Jakszyk (or maybe even Trevor Rabin for "90125" and "Big Generator")

As for "Bitches Brew", I can't see it being remixed and re-released anytime soon, since there was a deluxe box set released a few years ago.
As for Mahavishnu Orchestra, BRING IT ON! (especially Steven and Neil are on good terms with Sony after the first 2 ELP releases) :)

The first Yes album with Peter Banks is actually pretty good too. Agree that The Yes Album will be better in surround.

There have been plenty of rumours about Relayer being next. Not enough substance in them for me to be 100% convinced, maybe 70%?

Whichever it is, it is already done so why the delay until next year to manufacture it? Maybe to give AF some time to get their stereo version out.

While it is frustrating for us to wait for something that seems ready for release I think there's more behind the scenes stuff than many people realize.

(what follows is me talking out my backside - no inside info or anything)

First of all, Panegyric are not Sony or Universal. I suspect that the manufacturings costs are the most expensive part of these sets given that they all (DGM, SW etc) seem to be fairly well equipped in their own studio environments. Taking that into account I might guess that they also think of their target sales crowd and from that try to come up with a sched that fits into this particular market.

Look at whats already on the cars for this autumn - CttE, XTC, KC Road to Red, another SW CD/DVD (or BR) EP...another Tull release. How many of us want to buy all of those? Factor in the "it's coming up on Christmas" thing and I can easily see why spreading it out a little makes perfect sense - for them and for us.
