Well, three songs in and sad to report that the rears contain no unique elements to this point. Only faint, ambient replicas of the fronts and center. Sound quality is very good however.

EDIT: Track 4 offered some hope with tambourine and piano more prominent in rears, but track 5 is mainly a wash of reverb back there.

Surely the answer must lie somewhere in between...

Yes, it is. Was hesitant to open this page before listening to the whole album. Glad I made it here before all the harsh criticism... This is not an adventurous mix, to say the least. But I'm not feeling disappointed. The sound quality is mind blowing, really. String instruments, of which there are many, are coming from the rears almost exclusively (which I LOVE). How do you sleep and Oh yoko are the most exciting, mix-wise, on this set. There's definitely a full and immersive soundstage throughout the album. I'm very happy with this release.

This is what I can say after a first listen. By tomorrow, after a 20 more spins, I'll be able to give a more thorough review.

Just completed my first listen. Once getting over my initial disappointment of the conservative use of the rears I found myself quite enjoying it. The sound quality is warm and engaging and the soundstage often feels expansive. It's definitely not the Steven Wilson approach to mixing but I feel many will be happy with it.

Did you listen to the original quad? Was it as bad as some of us remember it?

I'm sampling a bit of that now, Jon. Fidelity is good but so far sounds like "big stereo." Wow, in fact isolating the rears I don't think this is a dedicated quad mix at all! It appears they simply cloned the original stereo mix and applied it softly to the rears. It's labeled as original 1971 quadrasonic mix.

BTW, there are a number of pages in the book devoted to discussing the surround and quad mixes. There is also a visual representation or surround sound map of where the different instruments voices sit spatially in the mix. Also included is a picture of the cover of the original quad tape.

The book is gorgeous! Can't wait to dive into it.

I'm one of those who just ordered the bluray film figuring the 5.1 mixes of the album proper would be enough for me. Just not a big enough fan to want all the extra outtakes and versions...but reading some of these reviews is making me reconsider....sounds like a lot of thought went into the surround mixes.

That mix, be it US Q8, UK Q8, Japan RM or UK (and rest of the world) SQ was always considered pretty bad. Double Stereo with only a few hints of "real" surround.

Well mine was waiting for me when I got home from work so I don't have to Imagine any longer. The Blu-ray #1 is in and playing :D. As has been stated its not a discrete 5.1 mix but more of a wide wrap around stereo stage but with unbelievable fidelity! Ringo's drums never sounded better, and this is how bass should sound, full and deep! Hey at least the harmonica in Oh Yoko! does tend to move around a bit, so there is that. Many more listens needed of course.
