Pink Floyd - The Dark Side Of The Moon - SACD

I do also own the Blu-Ray but I like alternating from one to the other depending on what mood I'm in.

The Marvin Gaye Collection - SACD

This is one I enjoy a lot!

One of my biggest wish is for Universal to release the Quad mix of What's Going On on Blu-Ray or at the very least allow a reissue label to do so either on Blu-ray, DVD-A or SACD. Of course my big dream would be to have a Multichannel release of my favourite Marvin Gaye album: Trouble Man.

Listening to now..

The Miracles - Love Crazy

(SQ Quadraphonic thru the Involve Surround Master SQ Vinyl Edition...)

...oh man, this is just gorgeous..

I realise it has no chance of a Surround SACD reissue from AF but seriously guys, if you haven't heard this surround mix yet and you like your sweet soul music, track it down, somehow.. for a piece of plastic almost as old as me this record has no earthly right to sound so wonderful.

The Quad is a delight! Still, I'd love to know what the dickens happened to the 5.1 Universal were supposed to have done like 15 years ago..!? Its been erased from history.. I'm beginning to think it never happened and the rumours I've heard about it over the years are porky pies..

Come on Universal,
WHAT'S
GOING
ONNNNNNNNNNN....???? :p

I've been listening to the "quad conversions" of Diana Ross and The Supremes, and the Jackson 5's - Greatest Hits. I am totally blown away with both the sound quality and the performances, as well as the CD-4 decoding jobs on both of these.

I need to own both these on vinyl. Do you think I have any hope?

I have only the DTS Marvin Gaye hits collection. This SACD must sound much nicer.

I can get you the CD-4 of the Live Supremes album any day of the week but those two, ahh.. don't lose hope but it's a toughy I reckon.

Next up on the turntable of dreams...
(who am I kidding its an old Pro-Ject heap of shit I resurrected from the scrapheap.. in fact I thought I'd slung it out 10 years ago after a load of stuff fell on it and smashed the lid back when the roof was being done but earlier this year I found it in a box and managed to bring it back to life with a few replacement parts and.. occasional speed wobbles aside it's still doing its thing, bless it.. and well that set me off onto this SQ/Quad vinyl odyssey that is just an utter joy..) so, anyway..
"Listening to now (in surround)..

This Time We Mean It - REO Speedwagon (SQ LP)

This thing comes across as almost Q8 discrete thru the Surround Master, its astonishing the amount of separation those Involve guys managed to squeeze out of these old records..! It ROCKS..!!!

Still, if Audio Fidelity announced a Surround SACD of this one tomorrow (I doubt it..) I'd be all over it like a rash and pre order it double plus quick :D

Someone got one not long ago fairly cheap and posted the photo of it here. I'd like to do 24/96 transfer in stereo. I do those kinds of needle drops and love them even in plain old stereo playback.

Last night I did three needle drops to 24/96 high rez while I was online. I did Mott "The Hoople", (god does Ian's piano sound stunning), Grass Roots 16 Hits (a few of these songs are as good as hit radio ever got). and the mentioned Pink Floyd - WYWH (I picked up a near mint US SQ pressing back in 2000 on ebay at a steal to replace my teenage '76 copy which had seen it's better days.)

I'm going to do the ClickRepar on the files later tonight. SQ and CD-4 records can be recorded to 24/96 digital and decoded later if desired, so it's not a total waste of time to not decode them at this point. The main thing is clean copies of the LPs, newish stylus, and 24/96 digital recording.

I bought a Tascam DR 680 six channel recorder for other uses, but decided to do some quadraphonic LPs while it's sitting there next to my computer audiophile workstation. Beautiful recordings from this deck. I like it better than using a computer to record.

For some reason, the way the mixes are done on these two, I can really hear how much work Diana Ross and MJ put into their vocals on those tracks. The isolation of the vocals, and then mixed to quad does something I really like. The standard stereo mixes sound wonderful and bouncy of course, but these are a different, and I just love them.

I've got a question for ya Freddie: Did you do as that sticker on the album cover says? Did you get out of control?

I've found a lot of great music mixed in surround at the end of movies while the credits play on Blu-ray discs (especially John Williams scores!). The song "Orion" at the end of "Through The Never" (by Metallica) is great (especially if you turn up the rears a few decibels).

Yes! I've done a few audio-only rips of some of these. The first Cruel Intentions movie had pretty good tunes over the opening and closing credits, for just one example. And I'm almost embarrassed to admit it, but that Enya piece over the close of LOTR 1 is one of my go-to reference tracks, especially for checking the center channel.

What can I say? It's reeally pretty! :violin

I'm absolutely loving Simple Twist Of Fate!

Loggins & Messina Quad SACD

Yeah.....temporarily hooked up my system this afternoon....OK, this disc sounds excellent...

It is amazing ain't it. After I heard it once all the way through I did my other assessment test I put all quad through. I wired up the rear channels to play in all four speakers, so I hear only rear chans, but played in all four corners. The quality was tops, and I could play the missing sections off of my brain's memory chips and sing along just swell. I know the album fairly well.

Oh yeah...sounds excellent. Hard to believe something with this age can sound that good....

Oh well that kinda proves those Motown CD-4's do come up for decent money sometimes! Don't lost hope! :D

I've been put off the Mott SQ for the time being (apparently the SQ encode isn't upto snuff and I'm all about putting the SQ Surround Master thru it's paces right now!) but I'll no doubt get around to it in time.. the Grass Roots is one QS I picked up recently but haven't got around to trying it out (sounds like a keeper from what you're saying!).

That Tascam recorder looks like a nifty piece of kit! How does it interface with the computer? Does it have USB?

The Mott might not be a very hot surround experience on this album. But I love the music and production, and piano and sax are more prominent on the SQ mix than the stereo one.

The Tascam recorder does indeed have a USB jack for transferring the recordings to computer for the post work I do on the files. I've been doing needle drops for years, but only 24/96 for 18 months. It's quite a lovely deck.

Have you heard of that "fan" project in DTS called: Monkees - "Quarters"? It was sync-ups plus some extractions to create a Monkees quadraphonic 2CD set. This is going back 10 or 12 years. It likely used the Rhino Headquarters Sessions 3CD set for much of the source materials. It caused quite an internet stir because it was indeed discreet 4-chan. However, my opinion is that the fidelity was less than stellar, and the sync-up was not exact either. However, the set got pressed up eventually on silver pressed discs by some entrepreneur and was seen for sale as if a rare Japanese import, color artwork and all.

Anyway, I plan on recording the 3 CD set to 24/96 with all takes in sync (as much as possible), and further tweaking each track until it's as good as it can get, and mixing to 4-channels myself. So I am not going to try to recreate the Headquarters album in quad, but simply mix some of the Monkees "sessions" disc set for quad playback in the highest quality possible. I'll down-sample to 24/48 at the end. I think I can do something more interesting than what the Quarters set did. But I'm not sure. Just an interesting demo it might be. The Tascam unit is a good machine for the initial recording to 24/96. The reason for going to this high bit rate is because time stretching of music files often results in quality loss, this loss will be less when working in a higher resolution. I think that to get the best sync some time altering will be needed. I may be syncing different takes of songs together, so they are really going to need work. Just ideas I have gotten since buying this unit.
