Jack McDuff / Joey DeFrancesco - It's About Time (1996)
Concord SACD (2003) 5.1 DSD

Dueling Hammonds and swirling Leslie speakers with a small jazz combo.
Nothing in the center channel of the 5.1 mix but barely audible ambience.

Quad is wonderful for spreading the sound field and capturing the difficult-to-reproduce vibes of a B-3 / Leslie in a live room.

Have you had any problems with the SACD layer playback? Any sound defects?

Roger Waters - The Wall BD-V in 7.1
:party Happy 73rd birthday to Roger today, that egotistical, narcissistic, poetic, creative brain trust that has brought us so much wonderful music over the years! :upthumb

Roger Waters - Amused To Death on blu ray
Wonderful sound on this disc, but I find some of his solo stuff just too depressing to have in a regular rotation at my place, ergo this one doesn't come out all that often. (y)(n)

Funny you should mention it, but as I was typing the post I starting getting some horrible full volume pops by the third track.
Checked connections and cycled power with no improvement.
Switched to a different surround SACD with no problems, then went back to Jack & Joey and was fine.

What's your experience? Something touchy about this particular disc?

I've just received this one, my first ever Edgar Winter album. It's so cool receiving a twentyish sealed DTS CD. I really like the mix and fidelity on this one and the songs and performances are quite strong. Too bad there are no other Quad or 5.1 titles available on DTS CD or SACD.

I asked because after reading your post, I went to look at it on Amazon and noticed three customer reviews that said there was a problem with their disc. Just various sound anomalies - whatever. I might grab a copy, though - thanks -

I paid $20 delivered on eBay from cdfrjapan (shipped from China) after hearing a cut on the Concord SACD Jazz Sampler Vol. 2.
Factory sealed with a 14 day guarantee, which expired before I had a problem.
Buyer beware, I guess, like always.

Anybody else have any surround jazz organ recommendations?

Another one I received earlier today and it's not only a stunning performance but it also sounds amazing!

Bernard Haitink & Chicago Symphony Orchestra - Bruckner: Symphony No. 7 (SACD)

Listened to Chicago II. I switched back and forth between the BD quad and the DVD-A 5.1 and I think I prefer the 5.1 mix. The vocals come through better and everything just seems more expanded yet also slightly blended overall, but I also really like the discreteness of the quad mix too. I think I just prefer the more modern sensibilities in the 5.1 mix.

Now listening to Chicago III quadio.

Really enjoyed III but after switching to V on the BD quad for the first song, then switching to the DVD-A 5.1, I was really amazed at how much more expansive, with clearer vocals, and much deeper bass I got from the 5.1. I think V is even more drastically better on the 5.1 compared to the quad than II was, for my tastes. On "A Hit by Varèse" the bass practically growls, but in a nice clean way. :)

Why do I have no idea who these guys are?

I really had no idea who they were either until I noticed some releases of theirs appearing in the DTS-DVD poll section.
I've picked up 7 of their albums in surround (and traded one away for "Sailing to Philadelphia" by Mark Knopfler) and while I could potentially pick up more from them in the future, I barely play the ones I have now, partly because they are lossy DVD-V discs, but also just because there's plenty of other albums in my collection that I just prefer the music to.
But at least there's plenty of ways to audition something before you hit the 'buy' button, and that's what I recommend people do when it comes to these Nick Cave releases.

:)
