Gene,

from that article I posted:

"Featuring songs written as far back as 2010, events of recent years have given it a personal feel, with Smith mourning the loss of family members, including his late brother, Richard.
His death inspired the track I Can Never Say Goodbye - a window into grief-stricken frustration and regret.

When the track made its way into new songs included in last year's tour, Smith often had trouble completing it without becoming overwhelmed with emotion. He told Stephens that going on stage and singing the track "night after night" eventually became a "wonderful moment".
Speaking to Matt Everitt in an interview for the latest issue of Uncut magazine, since published on the band's YouTube channel, Smith explained these real-life touchstones came to define the record and set it apart from earlier albums.
"When you’re younger, you romanticise [death], even without knowing it. Then it starts happening to your immediate family and friends and suddenly it’s a different thing," he said."

BBC 2 have an evening dedicated to The Cure.

in case you are listening to the new cure album with headphones using apple music avoid the dolby atmos version which is terrible downmixed in stereo, and go for the hi-res lossless version instead which is mixed way much better.

i just realized that i had a setting turned on in the apple music app options that was always replacing my stereo downloads on my smartphone with the dolby atmos versions available. when the mixing is done well someone could not notice it, but in this case they were so different i had to figure out what was going on.

I listened to the Atmos of this on Tidal last night. Strong songs in that largely 'bubble of atmosphere' Atmos mixing style. Not that many discrete moments -- I noted one, but wasn't counting. It stood out, given this wasn't generally the mixing approach. As I'm not a big fan (I love the early Cure stuff the most) and the mix is not wowing me (it's 'OK'), I have decided to cancel my impulsive order. But if you're a big fan, there's still lots here to enjoy.

Is this a 4.1.4 Atmos mix?
I can't hear anything coming out of center or side speakers.
I am only half way through and have done some spot checks and like I said whoever mixed didn't use the whole playing field, strange in deed.
Too bad as I am pretty sure Steven Wilson is a Cure fan and bet he would mix Cure if he was asked.

I bought the three disc edition with Atmos on Blu Ray, and although it's not the most "adventurous" mix, IMHO it's immersive enough and certainly suits the style of the album. Easily worth the £17 I paid for it from Rarewaves!

The album iteself is, in my opinion, simply stunning, and also incredibly emotional. It's like Goth culture meets the reality of growing old and facing your uncertain future; the second track alone made me sob like a baby.

Taken as a whole I was completely blown away by my first listen (5.1 mixdown of Atmos)

Yes, it's an excellent album and I find the mix OK. If this was not already available to me via Tidal, I'd want to own it for sure.

There is lots coming out of the side(surrounds), but not much in the surround backs. Do you have your speakers mixed up?

That is what I saw when I looked at the decoded waveform of the last song, and again, no center channel activity.

I don't have a waveform or digital way of looking at things but just got up off my chair and like I said when i did a spot check, only did a couple of times and didn't hear anything on sides. On my second listen today you are correct their is stuff coming out the sides but not as loud and clear as I would say a Wilson mix or a Kosten mix but maybe that is as intended.

Has Robert Smith produced a masterpiece with this release, maybe as it is definitely a quality piece of art for sure as is meant to be listened from start to finish as I did't(bad on my part) do that on my first listen and I was a bit distracted as I was watching a hockey game at the same time.
Today I just turned off the lights and laid back on my lazyboy and this recording has a very dream like quality with some extra echo vocals coming out on the sides and rears kind of faintly as if trying to get out of the layered wash of keyboard and guitars. Is this the intent as it seems like those secondary vocals from the side/back are trying to be heard but are being drowned out by the kind of mirky distortion that Robert has created with this music.
Not sure if I described properly but that's what I felt what I was hearing.

This release is really growing on me.
It needs cranking!!
This will get regular plays :SG

Ooh how to understate how I feel about this release from The Cure!!

This is soooo trippy in its concept and delivery.
Definitely need to listen to it the whole way through.
Robert has really pulled out all the stops in producing a mighty fine album.
This is on my third run through....
So much to absorb.
Total pleasure for me

I really like this very much too, not the best Atmos mix, but good enough to enjoy. My only complaint is the lack of output from the surround back speakers. The music is very good, no complaint there.:) This is based from listening on Apple Music while I wait for my disc to arrive.

You will be pleasantly surprised by how he uses the back speakers. Not extensively I agree but there is far more detail from the Blu Ray!!
Sit back, grab a beer and ...
Enjoy 🤩

I thought it was the same mix? My meters for the surround backs don't lift at all when I play it on Apple Music, which means it's inaudible in the listening chair.
